Flood warnings across Michigan and how it relates to swimming pool owners hsp1

Pool owners take notice, extreme amounts of rain have fallen across the country recently, specially hitting Michigan quite hard. Homeowners and businesses alike are in panic finding their yards, and basements dangerously flooded. The flooding situation has created a boom for some industries like plumbers but,  for others it is creating downtime. With weather like this pool owners have to take precautions if they are in the process of building a new pool, or having service work done. The water table is increasing with every inch of rain we receive.

The pool owners should take notice whenever there is flooding because of hydrostatic pressure from ground water. Homeowners that are in middle of a construction project or service work can have the builder install a sump crock, and a hydrostatic plug. Sump crock allow you to visually inspect the ground water levels around your swimming pool and use a sump pump to relieve the hydrostatic pressure underneath your pool.

The hydrostatic plug for swimming pools is basically a hole in your pool which is an outlet installed in the deep end of your pool where the groundwater pressure hsp2would be the greatest. The hydrostatic plug can be uncapped when the pool is empty during service work or construction. The hydrostatic outlet allows the ground water to fill the pool up when it is uncapped which equalizes the pressures exerted on the pool structure. The hydrostatic plug is sealed with an o ring, with many different designs including low profile designs.

The problems with increasing hydrostatic pressure with swimming pools includes floating and wrinkled vinyl liners, bulging walls, cracked hsp3gunite, and cracking of cement pool decking. Swimming pool structures like fiberglass, and cement can pop out of the ground when left empty or partially drained! With flooding if a gunite pool pops out of the ground it is catastrophic, and normally non-repairable. Protecting your investment with a few steps will ensure your family enjoys your backyard oasis for many years to come.

Our company Affordable Pools Inc has made an informational video on the installation of the safety measures. Even during nice sunny summer days, weather can be unpredictable and you don’t want to be caught off guard! We go over the safety measures of draining a pool in our YouTube video here. Thank you for reading, if you have any questions regarding swimming pools visit http://www.affordablepoolsinc.com

General Information of Fiberglass Pool Coatings

   Knowledge for the Consumers

Our team at Affordable Pools Inc. would like to give you an update on the fiberglass pool industry, and the technology that has been developed. There have been some cheap fiberglass pool coatings in the past that have tarnished the reputation of anything having to do with fiberglass in the pool industry.

The Term Fiberglass refers to the mat (or strands) of strengthening product–not to the resin.

Fiberglass mats are all similar, but the bonding resins are very different.

The most common resins are polyester or vinyl ester resins that are then coated with a gel coat. Boats, cars, surfboards, and one piece pools are all poly or vinyl esters.

Polyester and vinyl ester resins are the old technology—epoxy polymers are the new technology.

Some states are now fining contractors $5000 for installing polyesters resin pools and forcing them to remove and dispose of the pool.

Only recently are some expensive boats and yachts being made from the superior epoxy polymer resins.
Epoxy polymers are significantly stronger in every strength test and bond tenaciously to virtually any surface. In addition, the epoxy polymers made by Oceaneering Research and Development are virtually non-porous. Polyester and vinyl esters are porous when viewed under a microscope, as are other coatings.

In addition, polyesters and vinyl esters contain noxious vapors which can gas-off for up to twenty years. This is precisely why standard fiberglass products are being phased out by EPA restrictions. Oceaneering epoxy polymers have no MEK’s, toluene, acetone, xylene, or benzene, and are virtually odor-free.

*Special Note from Author, Fiberglass pools are vastly superior to gunite, and vinyl liner pools. You will save time on maintenance with cleaning the waterline.  You will also save money because of the Chemical Dispersion rate is dramatically lower since the shell is virtually none porous and won’t absorb the chemicals like the other pool liners.
